Algerian side Entente Setif claimed their second CAF Champions League title following a 1-1 draw with DR Congo's AS Vita at the Stade Mustapha Tchaker in Blida on Saturday evening.

The tie ended 3-3 on aggregate over two legs with the Black Eagles prevailing on the away goals rule.

The title for Setif is their first since 1988 and a club from Algeria’s first since 1990.

With the first-leg ending 2-2, it was the Algerians who headed into the second-leg with a slight upper hand over their Congolese opponents.

The hosts were further boosted by the return of top scorer El Hedi Belameiri who took his place in the starting XI with Sid Ali Lamri dropping to the bench.

Setif almost got off to a the perfect start, following a succession of corners and Akram Djahnit finally found a teammate’s head, the ball looked destined for the back of the net, but Bawaka Mabele was well positioned to clear off the line with two minutes on the clock.

Vita’s first chance fell to Heritier Luvumbu whose powerful free-kick was well kept out by Abdelwahab Khedairia in the 12th minute.

Both teams were looking dangerous from set-pieces in a first-half that failed to produce a lot of opportunities for either side.

It was the Black Eagles who dominated the early exchanges, but Vita finished the half the stronger of the two sides with Basisila Lusadisu blazing his effort just over.

After what was a cagey opening stanza, things were bound to improve in the second with the Black Dolphins desperate for a goal.

It was the hosts though who took the lead four minutes after the break through Sofiane Younes who prodded in Belameiri’s cross in at the far post to subsequently send the capacity crowd into ecstasy.

The celebrations though were short lived with Vita drawing level in the 54th minute through Chikito Mabidi.

A defensive clearance fell favourably for the midfielder who fired home an unstoppable effort into the back of the net from just outside the area, 1-1.

The hosts shut up shop as the game drew to an end with the Black Eagles looking to hit them on the counter.

It was a proving to be a dangerous ploy, with Vita pushing forward in numbers while winning a number of set-pieces around Setif’s box.

Setif though were disciplined in defence and ultimately held on to end their 26 year wait for continental glory
