Giwa resumes at NFF office amidst chaos

Despite pending issues and claims to the legitimacy of Tuesday's Nigeria Football Federation elections, Chris Giwa on Wednesday resumed office as the president of the federation.
The Jos-born owner of Glo Premier League outfit, Giwa FC, was elected as the new president of the football ruling body in Nigeria amidst chaos. His election is being disputed since 40 of the 44 congress delegates met later on Tuesday to condemn his emergence as the NFF boss.
On Tuesday, the NFF congress, which sat at the Bently Hotel, Abuja, distanced itself from the process that brought up Giwa as the president of the federation with one of the presidential aspirants, Amanze Uchegbulam, describing the process as "a total disregard of the NFF statutes."
Speaking on resumption at the Glass House secretariat of the NFF, Giwa told journalists in Abuja that his board wants to chart a new course for Nigerian football, claiming he was duly elected.
When asked his opinion as to why two congresses were held on Tuesday, Giwa said: "No, it's not true that we had two congress sittings yesterday. We had only one congress.
"What was agreed upon is that there would be an election yesterday. Anybody sitting outside that congress to bring out an agenda is a lie."
He also reiterated that the disputed election that brought him into office was legitimate despite claims in certain quarters that suggests a Fifa observer must be present during the elections.
"It is not in the statutes that there should be any Fifa observer at the elections, I think it has to do with the house, if the congress says it is okay with them, then it stands.
"It is what Fifa will follow and adhere to. It has to do with the house.
"I don't believe there's any other election coming up on 4th of September. There won't be another election. Yesterday's election stands," Giwa said on Wednesday in Abuja.
Giwa also went ahead to state that the new NFF executive committee will do its best to move Nigeria football forward, starting with moving its headquarters to the new Sunday Dankaro House in Abuja.
"I think we will move out of this place immediately. Since the incident that happened here, it has been my desire that when I come into office the secretariat should be moved to the permanent site in less than one or two weeks," Giwa said.
"I don't think it is lack of funds that made them (Maigari's board) not to have moved the secretariat to the permanent site.
"Sometimes, I see it as what you put as your top priority. I think one of the first priorities of this board when we assume office is to move to a befitting place as our secretariat."

Alexis Sanchez's first goal for Arsenal since his £35m move from Barcelona claimed the prize of a place in the Champions League group stage for the 17th successive season on a tense night at Emirates Stadium.
The Chilean struck the goal that edged out Besiktas but Arsenal had to survive nervous moments - including playing the last 14 minutes with 10 men after Mathieu Debuchy was sent off - before winning this qualifier.
And for manager Arsene Wenger, Sanchez's strike ensured a rich reward on his expensive summer investment as Arsenal once again go into Thursday's draw for the group phase.
Besiktas were furious when Jack Wilshere's first-half tackle on Ramon Motta in the area went unpunished while Arsenal missed chances of their own to ease the anxiety sweeping around the stadium in the closing stages.

.Wenger must now decide whether losing striker Olivier Giroud - out for the rest of the year after surgery on a broken tibia - will force him into the transfer market before the window closes on Monday.

Arsenal have attacking talent but it remains open to debate whether they have the sort of wider firepower that will enable them to mount a serious Premier League title challenge and tackle the best the Champions League has to offer.
