Female Artisan wins contract for military sweaters after a display of brilliance

An artisan wife of a soldier in Adamawa State has won contract from the Chief of Army Staff to produce a thousand sweaters after a display of brilliance in a few samples.

The lucky soldier’s wife at the 23 Armored Brigade, Yola, was awarded contract to knit the 1,000 sweaters popularly called pullovers in army parlance.

The 23 Armored Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Sani Garba Mohammed, said the Chief of Army Staff, Lt General Buratai, asked the woman, Mrs Helen Aci, to produce the pullovers for inspection.

Making the disclosure on Monday in Yola during the flag-off of distribution of starter packs to 53 wives and children of soldiers and members of host community enrolled in the Nigerian Army Entrepreneurship and Skills Acquisition, Muhammed said Burutai awarded the contract to Mrs Helen Aci during inspection visit to the command last week.

The brigade commander said, “If you recall during the inspection visit by Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Burutai, he saw some sweaters knitted by one woman in the barrack.

“The COAS became interested in the brilliant work and awarded her contract to produce 1,000 sweaters popularly known as pullover to Nigeria Army as samples.

“As I speak to you now, the woman has started producing three different types of the sweaters which we are going to the army headquarters.”

He stressed that the headquarters was ready to order more if the woman produced good product.

On the Entrepreneurship and Skills Acquisition training, the brigade commandant said the centre had enrolled about 77 beneficiaries, among whom 53 were given starter packs.

”The beneficiaries include Children and spouses of soldiers as well as neighbouring communities,” he said, explaining that the training was to empower and improve the living condition of families of soldiers and maintain cordial relationship with the barrack communities.

The starter packs distributed to the beneficiaries are for knitting, sewing, hair dressing, ICT and Shoe making.
