ABIA AND POLITICS

It is unfortunate that disagreement has hit a political camp in Abia State. Don’t just disturb your head, thinking of what I am driving at. The PDP in Abia State is in a mess following the outcome of congresses in the state, which, reportedly, did not hold. It was gathered that no election materials were seen in any ward. And the 184 wards in Abia State are expected to elect delegates that will vote in the PDP primaries so as to present to the masses the PDP flag bearer for gubernatorial election. Where were the election materials, talking about the collation materials, identity tags for those to go to supervise the elections and party registers? Who seized the election materials?

Remarkably, the three Senators from Abia State----Uche Chukwumerije (Abia North), Nkechi Nwaogu (Abia Central) and Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South)----have stuck to their guns, saying that there was no congress in Abia State. Other politicians, who concurred with the Senators, are: Emeka Wogu, Alex Otti, Nnenna Ukeje etc. As it stands, the Abia State chapter of the PDP is in a chaotic state. And the Senators have vowed to contest any result released. This sounds interesting. It sounds ridiculous as well. Is this their morning? Why are they shouting at the top of their voices now that their interests are no longer protected? What are they agitating for or criticizing against? Could it be that the governor has gone contrary to what he promised them? Well, let us wait and see what will happen in PDP, Abia State. Be assured that something will definitely happen at the end of the day. It is either they keep warring and a candidate from another political party wins the gubernatorial election or they agree and allow the people to elect their delegates. I think the latter is commendable, and far better than the former.

Also, the latest development in the PDP, south-east, could destroy President Goodluck’s plan of sweeping the six eastern states in the presidential election. And there is urgent need for the PDP to put their house in order. Nobody succeeds when his house is on fire. There is war in Enugu State branch of the PDP----the governor’s faction versus the deputy Senate President’s faction. Ebonyi State is not left behind because of the political interest shown by the former Health Minister. Obviously, the President is counting on the votes from south-east and south-south geopolitical zones. And now that confusion has hit hard and the unity in some of the PDP led states is growing wings, what is the fate of President Goodluck? It seems the APC is doing more underground politics than the PDP. If not, why would congresses in some states fail? And they should know that nothing destroys unity like disagreement. Plus, once disagreement crops up, failure gathers strength. Sure.

More, the resentment from different quarters concerning what happened the week before at the wards in Abia State brings to mind what Abians heard about the governor’s anointed candidate. Was that the reason why no election materials were provided? Could it be that some person wanted to hijack the congress? And if yes, why? What is wrong if the people decide on what they want and who they want? And what would have happened if the congresses had held in Abia State? Please, do read what Senator Uche Chukwumerije read on behalf of the aspirants: “It was a cruel stab on PDP’s legacy of internal democracy and a crude mockery of our great party’s assurance of a level playing ground. The gross aberration is unprecedented in executive impunity and it is the ultimate in anti-democracy conspiracy and fascist fraud.”

Certainly, there are people who are rooted in the politics played at the state level with regard to Abia PDP. And if such people should shout wolf, then factionalisation is in the offing. The possibility of a candidate from another political party clinching the seat has become 50%. And I wonder what will be happening in the erstwhile governor’s camp. Don’t you think that the politicians in the PPA are putting their acts together? And that they will spring surprises when the time comes? What about the APGA of Abia State? Do they have structure? And could there be a messiah among them? Should I write off the APC of Abia State? Of course, I don’t see the APC as a force in Abia State.

Then it boils down to what Abians want. For a moment, Abians should think and decide on what they want. In some sense, what happened at the wards has exposed selfishness and acrimony, and sentiment. But the Abians are in a better position to decide which way the arrow flies. It is true that politics is beyond spoken words. The matching of words with actions could break down the gigantic wall. But who breaks the ice? Who is capable of putting the strategic plans on the table and shielding away the arrows from different sources? The time for change is now. And Abians should stand up to the challenge.
