Statutory delegates will not participate in our primary elections - APGA

The attention of APGA aspirants and party members is hereby drawn to Section 84(8) of the Electoral Act 2022 which stipulated that only democratically elected delegates will "vote at the convention, congress or meeting" of political parties for the nomination of its candidates.

By the above legislation, statutory delegates, comprising of party officers and elected political office holders; have been excluded as delegates in the INDIRECT PRIMARIES of political parties.

To address this lacuna in Section 84(8) of the Electoral Act 2022, the National Assembly has recently amended the section. However, Mr President is yet to endorse his assent.

Consequently, statutory delegates will not participate in the forthcoming primaries of APGA, starting with House of Assembly primaries tomorrow May 24, 2022.

For the avoidance of doubt, only ad-hoc delegates, whose names are contained in the List of Ad-hoc Delegates will vote at APGA primaries.

Statutory delegates and party members whose names are not on the ad-hoc Delegate Lists are hereby advised to stay away from the venues of the forthcoming primaries. Security agencies have been briefed to enforce this directive.
