Abia State Government has said it would soon deploy 17 new compactors to support refuse management across the 17 local government areas of the state.

Commissioner for Information, Chief Okiyi Kalu, disclosed this yesterday during a visit to the Aba NUJ Chapel office on St. Michael’s road, Aba.

Okiyi-Kalu, however, said that the government would adopt a different approach to waste management for urban councils like Aba North, South, Umuahia North and the South with a view to boosting management of waste in areas.

He said: “We are actively reviewing the refuse management situation in Abia State and in line with our findings, we have decided to take things round the 17 LGAs.  “We are set to deploy about 17 new compactors to support the efforts of the local governments.

“Ultimately we are negotiating with investors who are keen on investing in waste conversion facilities in the state.

“These waste conversion facilities will help to take the state to another level which is the point where people make wealth from the waste they generate.”

On issue flooding around Ariaria axis, Okiyi-Kalu said the Ife-Obara water basin project which ought to take care of that was not pumping because the pump was not activated daily by Setraco, the construction company in charge of the project.

He said the government would reconstruct Ngwa, Obohia, Ohanku and adjoining roads in the area, stressing that Ikpeazu would put Aba roads in order to help in waste management and security.
