The 247th Senate meeting of the Abia State University (ABSU) held wednesday, 31st March 2021, at the Senate Chambers, returned unopposed, Professor G. I. N Emezue, Head of Department, (HOD) English/Litterature, as the new Deputy Vice Chancellor ( DVC) Academic, subject to ratification by the Governing Council of the University.

This followed the stepping down of his co-contestant, Professor Amanze Unagha, of the Department of Library and Information Sciences.

The Vice Chancellor, Distinguished Professor O. M Ogbulu, had earlier during the meeting, in line with the University regulation,  announced his nomination of Professor G.I. N Emezue, and Professor Amanze Unagha to Senate for voting to elect one of them as the new DVC Academic.

However, Professor Amanze, while expressing gratitude to the Vice Chancellor, for finding him worthy and capable to be nominated for the exalted position, explained, that he will step down for his colleague, Professor Emezue, whom he described as a very close friend, thereby making way for his being returned unopposed as the new DVC Academic of the University.

Senate also approved the change of nomenclature and review of some programs in the Faculty of Education. They are, Education/Home Economics, to be known and called Home Sciences and Hospitality Management, as well as Education/ Business Studies, to be called Business Education. The course contents were also reviewed to reflect the current needs of the society.

Meanwhile, the Vice Chancellor, used the forum, to restate his commitment to ensure that salary arrears are cleared, while expressing his profound gratitude to the Governor/Visitor/ to the University, Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, PhD, for his unprecedented support to the University especially in these challenging moments.

He further appealed to Senate members to market the admission opportunities available in other diciplines in the University, aside the over subscribed Professional courses to their communities,  churches, neighborhood and other places, in order to give many candidates the chance to gain admission into the University.
