Returning Goodluck Jonathan back as President after the 2015 has been described as the best thing that would happen to Nigeria. This is the verdict of Dickson Uwakwe Kalu, who spoke to Eberechi Obinagwam. He said despite several destructive criticisms against Jonathan’s government, he remains an aspirant to beat in the coming 2015 Presidential election. Kalu is Coordinator of Goodluck Jonathan Foundation (GDF) Benin Republic.

What inspired the formation of (Goodluck Jonathan Foundation (GDF)?

Thank you very much. Nigerians have lived with many successive administrations that have deprived them of the basic necessities of life and fundamental human right. Given this situation, we were inspired to form the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation (GDF) in support of the good Leadership performance of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan who we all know that amidst numerous challenges has pioneered the affairs of Nigeria with accountability, probity and sticking to his transformation agenda. So basically, GDF stands for Good Governance. We take good governance to the grassroots, because we have to lay a sound leadership foundation for our unborn Children.

You sound as if Nigeria is all rosy during President Jonathan’s on-going tenure, what about the obvious challenges like security?

Yes, Nigerians may not be enjoying the efforts and policies of the present administration of President Jonathan under the Peoples Democratic party (PDP). But this is as a result of opposition parties who have left the way politics is to be practiced and turned to work against the President’s efforts. Opposition parties are the reason why Nigerians are not enjoying the present administration. But again they should understand that by so-doing they are working against the unity of the country.

How can that be?

The politics of criticism have bedeviled good governance in Nigeria. Propagandists and Opposition should join hands with the President to build a great Nigeria that we all can be happy with. In other words, GDF basically is campaigning for the return of the President.

President Goodluck Jonathan has done so well and deserves a second term. We stand in support of him based on principle of administrative continuity and good governance.

In Benin Republic, we have millions of Nigerians comprising of traders, students and residents. One week after inaugurating Goodluck Foundation on August 19, 2014, nothing less than 2.5 million Nigerians out of the 7 million in Benin Republic have already filled endorsement form in support of President Jonathan’s re-election in 2015. We are not supporting him because of what we have to benefit as a group or individually.

So what is the Composition and structure of GDF?

GDF is composed of eminent politicians in PDP; we have as our patrons, the present Senate President, Senator Davis Mark, Former Anambra State Governor Chukwudife Ezeife, Ibrahim Mantu, Tom Ikoh and Engineer Okoro Ebiri, just to mention a few of them. We have offices in the 36 States of the country and the headquarters at FCT Abuja.

What other programmes does GDF has?

Like I said earlier, we are grassroots supporters for good governance and protectors of human right. In Benin, some people who have immigration problems have had it settled by GDF through the Nigerian embassy. Some who have been convicted to imprisonment have seen their cases sorted out for them by GDF, we have set free those who have committed no crime and yet detained by Benin Police. We are also aiming to offer scholarships to pupils in primary schools and high institutions.

Funding for this objective has been by members of the foundation. We are always in constant communication with our head office in Abuja, working with the Directorate for planning and research and they put us through before any event

So how did you respond to the news of President Jonathan’s return by PDP as its sole presidential aspirant?

Indeed, it is very good news for Nigerians, PDP and the foundation too. We are happy because one good turn deserves another; continuity is good for Nigeria now. The Governors have returned him too; we join with many Nigerians to congratulate the President.

What is your take on the efforts of our soldiers, combating Boko haram?

The soldiers have done so well, sticking out their neck against Boko Haram. In the real sense of it, terrorists are minority to a great population like Nigeria. But I still find fault with those who are working against the Federal Government. A house divided against itself cannot stand, opposition are leaking the strategies of the federal government, this is not fair.
