The Deputy Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Uchendu has called for immediate Government intervention in the Leadership tussle going on at Okagwe community in Ohafia.

The Deputy Speaker made this call yesterday at the floor of the Abia state house of Assembly when he moved a motion of urgent public importance on ‘Reported Loss of Life and Properties in Okagwe Ohafia, Occasioned by Intra-Communal Crisis and the Need for Urgent Government Intervention'.

The motion by the Deputy Speaker follows a violent conflict that has claimed a life with lots of properties damaged in Okagwe Ohafia.

The conflict which has truncated the peace and security enjoyed by the people of that community was caused by a leadership tussle as it concerns who becomes the next and rightful traditional ruler of the community.

According to the Deputy Speaker, if an urgent action is not taken by the government, the conflict may escalate, thereby destabilizing the security and societal development of that region.

In his prayer, the Deputy Speaker asked that the house do mandate the commissioner of homeland security and the commissioner of Local Government and Chieftaincy affairs to jointly take urgent actions in resolving the intra-communal crisis. He also called for adequate security to be provided in the community pending when the issue is resolved.

Consequently, the house resolved and mandated the Commissioner of Police and other relevant security agencies to step in immediately to forestall further loss of lives and properties while the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs was mandated to ensure amicable settlement of the leadership tussle in the community.
