Group Slam APC over Consensus Support

Following formal announcement by governors of All Progressives Congress (APC), on Wednesday

, that they would support a consensus arrangement for the emergence of a presidential candidate for their party for the 2015 election, a group has criticised the decision.

The group which identified itself as Activists for Good Governance (AGG) criticised the party saying they should not adopt the Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP) way in getting their candidate, but should do their own thing differently. They promise to protest if the party goes ahead with the plan.

The group explained their position through its leader, Comrade Declean Ihekaire, in a press conference they organised on guarantees for the emergence of credible candidates for the 2015 elections, through credible party primaries. “I was shocked when it was reported on front page of Punch (newspaper) that they are trying to arrive at a Consensus candidate for presidency. I feel it is morally wrong; we are appealing to APC not to follow the same line with the PDP because if they do, it will lead to the groups protest. It is not different from what PDP did in respect of Goodluck Jonathan, and already Nigerians are saying no to it. There should be credible primaries where a candidate should emerge.” He stated.

He went on to say; “we are not only referring to APC alone but to O

other political parties, if they continue with adoption and this consensus of a thing, we are going to walk against them here because the general election starts from political parties, whoever a political party brings out, is what they are selling to Nigerians, so we are saying sale good people to us but through legitimate primaries because if you don’t do the primaries then you won’t give us the legitimate candidates.” He said

He further explained that it did not make any sense for a card carrying member of a political party to be disfranchised. “It doesn’t make any sense when you are a card carry member of political party, and you cannot vote. It is wrong; the idea of this congress or delegate of a thing I see as a monumental fraud which should be discountenanced with and what should be encourage is that people who are registered members of a political party should be able to vote in primaries. That will bring about people from the grassroots occupying positions.”

The APC governors made their position known to support consensus presidential candidate recently, after a meeting of their forum, which was held at the Kwara State Government House in Ilorin. At the meeting, the governors also demanded a meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan on the reported dwindling resources accruing to their states from the federation account.
