11.5 million children without formal education worries ASUBEB

The Executive Chairman of Abia State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), Elder Josiah Anonaba, has expressed concern about children without formal education in the country.
According to him, they are over the 11.5 million.
Anonaba spoke yesterday at the formal handover of a school block belonging to St. Vincent De Paul Centre in Umuafai Ndume, Umuahia North council of Abia State, renovated by workers of the Umuahia branch of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
The cost of the project was put at N5,109,420.50.
He blamed inadequate funding and decaying facilities for some of the problems of the education sector.
Anonaba lamented that such problems had seriously affected the country’s drive to become a major player in science and technology.
He praised the workers for renovating the school.
The Branch Controller of Umuahia CBN , Mr Ogbu Michael, said the workers decided to renovate the three-wing school block because it had dilapidated.
Coordinator of the centre, Rev. Sister Gertrude Ukanwoko, praised the workers for their efforts.
She said: “The centre has boosted the confidence of many physically and mentally challenged persons and helped them to be useful in society.
“Their productive ability sends a strong message to parents who think their deaf and dumb children are useless to bring them to our centre and see what God can do.”
Catholic Bishop of Umuahia Diocese, who conducted a mass service to mark the event, urged the CBN to extend its skill entrepreneurship development to the inmates.
