Petrol Tanker Crushes 13-year-old Road Sweeper to Death in Imo

A petrol tanker Friday crushed a 13-year-old in Owerri, the Imo state capital.

The incident occurred around 7.43am at West End Roundabout, Old Nekede Road, Owerri, the Imo state capital.

The incident reportedly occurred after the driver lost control of the vehicle in an attempt to climb the hilly road heading towards Aba Road.

It was gathered that the unnamed girl was assisting her mother to sweep the road.

According to witness, they had finished sweeping and were about crossing the road, the tanker emerged. They were waiting for the tanker to pass before it lost control.

The mother escaped death by whiskers, while the girl was trapped under the fallen tanker and she was later confirmed dead by the Red Cross.

Although there was no spillage, the area was cordoned off by the officials of civil defense and Road Safety, while men of the State fire service were on standby in case of an incident of fire.

The director of the Imo State Fire Service, Japhet Okoroafor, who confirmed the incident, said he and his men arrived the scene early to avert any calamity.

 

He also urged motorists to use alternate routes for the time being until the vehicle was removed from that spot.
