A call has been made for Abians to adapt to climate change with change to behavioural patterns. This is in a bid to save the environment from further degradation. The call was made at an event  tagged "Community Sensitization on Adaptation of Climate Change in Abia".

Climate Change in Nigeria is evidenced with variable rainy and dry seasons, depending on location.
It is increasingly becoming a serious challenge to Nigeria's socio-economic development.
Some of its manifestations are seen in increase in draught, scarcity of food instigated somewhat by irregularities in rainfall and flooding.

This change in weather patterns that remain in place for an extended period of time is said to have affected alot of farm produce especially at the rural areas.

This may have necessitated the need for this enlightenment campaign for community dwellers held by National Coalition on Gas Flaring and Spills in the Niger Delta in collaboration with Foundation for Environmental Right Advocacy and Development.

Participants were drawn from the seventeen Local Government Areas of the state to seek adaptive measures that will help to deal with the issues of Climate change especially in rural communities.

It also sought to find a solution to some to some of the environmental degradation caused by man.

The Guest Lecturer, Ikechukwu Ukaegbu, Desk Officer Climate Change Desk, Ministry of Environment revealed that Abia State in a bid to tackle the issues of climate change created a unit with trained personnel to educate the public on the issues and possible Management measures.

The need to bring an end to the incidents of gas flaring, and develop an attitudinal change to the environment has become imperative in the changing environmental conditions.
