The widow of Mr Chimobi Nworgu, a commercial motorcyclist, who was killed by a trigger-happy soldier at a military checkpoint in Umuokereke, Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State, has cried out for justice.
Mrs Chiamaka Nworgu spoke shortly after the killer soldier, Corporal Johnson Ajayi, was arraigned by the police before the Umuahia Chief Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
She appealed to the state government to ensure that her husband’s killer did not escape justice.
Chiamaka said, “I have yet to come out of the trauma of the tragic death of my husband.
“My late husband was our breadwinner. I don’t know how to carry on with life and raise my two kids alone as I don’t have anything doing.”
Magistrate Linda Ugbaja remanded Ajayi in prison after reading the one count of murder to him.
The charge read, “That you, Johnson Ajayi, on August 7, 2019, at Umuokereke village, Obingwa, shot and killed one Chimobi Nworgu with a firearm, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 319 (1) of the Criminal Code, Cap. 80 Vol. 3, Laws of Abia State, Nigeria, 2005.”
The suspect could not make a plea after the charge was read to him.
When asked if he had a counsel, the suspect said, “They did not allow me to bring one.”
The magistrate ordered that the suspect, who had been court-martialled by the Nigerian Army and dismissed from service for killing the motorcyclist who refused to part with N100 bribe, be remanded in prison custody, while the case file be sent to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.
The matter was adjourned till September 16, 2019, for the report of compliance.
