The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC Thursday opened its defence in the Abia State Governorship Election Petition filed by the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Alex Otti against Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

The Petitioners want the Justice A. L. Ogumoye led panel sitting in Umuahia to order the cancelation of the March 9 polls which returned Okezie Ikpeazu for a second term in office as Governor Abia State, South East Nigeria.

Three witnesses who testified for the electoral body, Echefu Charles, Asagwara Uchechukwu and Okoro Martins who claimed to be electoral officers for Umuahia South, Ohafia and Bende Local Government Areas of Abia State, insist that the  conduct of the  governorship election under their watch complied substantially  with the electoral guidelines.

They denied receiving any report against any of the election adhoc staff indicted for refusing to use the  smart card readers during the election.

In their evidence in chief, the witnesses notes that the table of results presented as exhibits by the petitioners were false because it only represented votes scored by three parties, while excluding 29 others who equally participated in the exercise.

The matter is adjourned to 22nd of July for continuation of hearing.
