Former chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ikeja branch,Monday Ubani has urged Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to clamp down on any political party running foul of its guidelines on rallies.

In exclusive interview with Factnewsonline, Ubani stated that the electoral body should rise and enforce the law because it has the powers to do so. He explained that INEC, as an independent body has been powered by law to make pronouncements for the start and finish of campaigns before elections, and also to stop any breach and to punish offenders.

The law requires that parties must not embark on rallies until 90 days to elections, when the restrictions on campaigns will be lifted.

“Campaigning before the time is already going on, and politics is now being played more than governance. However, it is not only PDP that is doing this, but PDP is being pronounced because it is doing is own with so much impunity all over the place. But all the parties are guilty.

He condemned the action of governors abandoning their states to go to Abuja, on a daily bases, to campaign and endorse candidates as was done even for President Goodluck Jonathan by the PDP.

He saw it as irresponsible as the public officers seem to forget that they were first and foremost elected by the people to serve them.

“Many of them have not yet completed their terms, people are complaining about their miss-governance of their states, still they abandon their states to go on illegal campaigns” he stated.

It was for this reason that he called on INEC to step in and save country from the ugly situation.
