A team of certified instructors from the United States under the American Heart Association’s HeartSaver CPR AED programme have been engaged by the Abia State government to train selected officers of the Nigeria Army, Nigeria Navy and the police in an emergency medical skillset that include cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), automated external defibrillator (AED), Basic Life Saving(BLS) and first aid care.

Also, to be trained are officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Nigeria Civil Defense Corps, the Nigeria Prisons, the Abia State Fire Service, and Life guards at several swimming pools.

The training is being organized under the auspices of Abia State Emergency Medical Services and would begin on June 5th 2019 and last for eight days.According to a release from Government House Umuahia, the objective of the training is to deepen the coverage for emergency care in Abia as the beneficiaries are deployed to work in Abia.

The officers will be equipped with specialized skills that will make them capable of rendering quick assistance to victims of accidents, drowning, heart attack and injuries before taking them to hospital.

The training workshop is to be declared open by the Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu on Thursday 6th June 2019 at Michael Okpara Auditorium Umuahia by 10.30 a.m. Head of the Abia Emergency medical Services, Dr. Chukwuemeka Nwakanma who spoke to the media said the training is adjudged first of its kind and indicates how much premium the Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu places on the health and safety of Abia citizens.

The training which is totally funded by Abia State Government will enable the beneficiaries who are mostly federal government employees to carry out their functions as emergency first responders/safety officers with more self-confidence and capabilities.Last year 140 rural and urban health workers from the 17 LGAs were trained and equipped under the American Heart Association programme for Basic Life Support and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation
