End of the road for transformer thief

The saying which states that “every day may be for the thief while one day will be for the owner” played out recently in Lagos State, and became the lot of Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC). It was the electrocution of a young transformer thief at Fagba area of the state.

The incident took place at some feeder pillar units at Lonlo bus stop, along the popular Iju Road. The transformer belonged to the company, and an eyewitness accounts had it that the young transformer thief, wearing a black T- shirt and a pair of jean trouser, had gone to the transformer pad to steal some parts of the transformer, while there was no light in the area.

First, he successfully removed one feeder unit from the 500KVA transformer, and then battled to remove the other one. But unfortunately for him, the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) chose that very moment to restore power to the area, and he was electrocuted to death.

Speaking concerning the incident Engineer Coker, one of the officials of IKEDC, told journalist that his team had to rush to the bus stop when some residents called to inform them about the incident.

He explained that suspected cable thieves have been carrying out their criminal activities in the area for sometimes now by vandalizing transformers and other properties of the company installed even around the Agbado railway crossing at the Iju area.
