The gunmen who abducted a lecturer at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Prof. Olayinka Adegbehingbe, were in military camouflage, the police have said.

It was gathered that the camouflage made many motorists and commuters who ran into their ambush to think that they were soldiers.

Adegbehingbe was returning to his place of work from Lagos on Sunday when he was abducted in an area between Asejire and Ikire town.

The gunmen were said to have laid in ambush for commuters at some bad portions of the road, where vehicles could not speed.

Adegbehingbe was said to be travelling with his wife, Prof Bernice, said to be the Dean of Faculty of Clinical Sciences in OAU, when the gunmen abducted him, as other commuters fled into the bush.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Folasade Odoro, explained that preliminary reports indicated that the abductors wore military uniforms.

Odoro said the state Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Ige, shortly after receiving a report of the incident on Sunday, visited the crime scene.
