2019 Elections; Nigerian Media Charged on Professional Reportage

The media in Nigeria have been charged on professional reportage of the 2019 general elections with less than three months to the start off of the elections.


This was the crux of a two day workshop held for media practitioners within the Southeast and Southsouth at Enugu with the theme "Best Practices and Professional Reportage of the Electoral Process".


The event was put together by the International Press Centre, with support by the European Union.


The Director, International Press Centre, Mr. Lanre Arogundade in an opening remark explained that the workshop was put together to critically examine the interconnections between the public, the media and elections towards developing an agenda that seeks to strengthen the role of the media in facilitating a credible electoral process.He added that the need to fine-tune the skills of journalists in the professional and ethical reportage of democratic processes and elections as well as commit to professional, conflict sensitive, citizen focused, gender focused and digital reporting of the 2019 elections has become imperative. Mr. Arogundade who was represented by the Programme Director, IPC. Stella urged the media to ensure the proper usage of her Agenda setting role to bring to the front burner issues that affect the society before, during and after the elections.


Resource Person's at the event, Prof. Stella Okunna, of the Mass Communication Department, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Mr. Jide Ojo, Executive Director, OJA Development Consult, and Mrs. Funke-Treasure Durodola of Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria all spoke on different topics hinged on the role of the media in not just reporting the electoral process but to hold political office holders accountable based on their manifestoes during the electioneering period.
They noted that the media as an oxygen which a society survives on must stop playing to the gallery but rise up to their responsibilities to ensure a better society.


They also called on the media to imbibe international best practices in carrying out her duties and must ensure self development to become relevant in the Nigerian society and beyound.
