The socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has resolved to push for constitutional review, and regional government as calls for restructuring once again resurfaced. At the group’s summit on Monday, held in Awka, Anambra State, members proposed a 21-point solution to serve as a guide to actualizing a 21st century restructured Nigeria.

The solution includes a single term of six years for the president, rotational presidency, and five vice presidents, each of whom will come from a different geo-political zone.

It also includes the demand for resource control by states, and a merit and equal opportunities commission to replace the federal character commission.

Though all the South East states governors, except the host governor, Chief Willie Obiano were absent at the summit, many prominent Igbos, including Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu who was chairman of the event, President of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo, Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe and Senator Victor Umeh; renowned economist, Professor Pat Utomi, former Aviation Minister,  Chief Osita Chikioka, Dr. Joe Nawaogu, Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, Senator Ike Nwachukwu, Speaker Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Rita Maduagwu, representatives of Igbo in Diaspora, among many others. Senator Ike Ekweremadu, Deputy Senate President during his address condemned the classification of IPOB as a terrorist organisation by federal government and demanded for the reversal of the tag.

Ekwerwmadu enjoined all to support the restructuring of Nigeria saying that the day was a historic day in Nigeria, and that the National Assembly would continue to network with other members in other parts of the country as no zone can effectively champion the restructuring campaign alone.

He said restructuring was for the benefit of all, and that no zone can truly claim to be the biggest beneficiaries of the restructuring campaign, as doing so would be a win, win situation for all zones of the country.

President of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo stated that all the arms of Ohanaeze accepted the recommendations by the various committees that drafted the stand of Ndigbo on the restructuring, adding that Nigeria needed a constitution because “the present constitution was dead.”
