Nigerian governors elected under the platform of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, have endorsed the President Goodluck Jonathan as the party’s flagbearer in the 2015 election.

Rising from a four-hour meeting, held at the Akwa Ibom Governors Lodge in Abuja on Thursday, the governors urged all PDP members to rally round Mr. Jonathan and ensure that he emerges the sole candidate of the party ahead the 2015 election.

The party has fixed its presidential primaries for December 6.

The governors who attended the meeting are Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom, Idris Wada, Kogi, Liyel Imoke, Cross River, Ramalan Yero, Kaduna, and Ibrahim Dankwambo, Gombe state.

Others are Theodore Orji, Abia, Emmanuel Uduaghan, Delta, Jonah Jang, Plateau, Seriake Dickson, Bayelsa, Enugu Sullivan Chime, Benue Gabriel Suswam, as well as the acting Governors of Adamawa, Umaru Fintiri and Taraba, Garba Umar.

The governors of Jigawa, Katsina, Sokoto and Kebbi were represented by their deputies.

Mr. Jonathan is yet to announce his intention to seek re-election though happenings in the ruling party suggest that he will face little or no difficulty picking the ticket of the party.

Only the governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido has been speculated to be eyeing the position.

The support of PDP Governors is essential to picking the party’s ticket, as most delegates from the states are nominees of state governors.

In a Communique presented by Mr. Akpabio, who is the Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, the governors said having performed well, Mr. Jonathan deserved a second term in office.

The Forum hereby endorses Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for a second term in office and resolved to support his bid for re-election come 2015, it said.

The Forum urges all PDP faithful to support this gesture which should enable the president to become the sole presidential candidate of the PDP come 2015.

The governors also pledged their support to the party’s candidate in the governorship election recently held in the state of Osun, Iyiola Omisore in his legal battle to upturn the declaration of the All Progressives Congress, APC, candidate and governor of the state, Rauf Aregbesola as the winner of the election.

We salute the decision of our candidate Sen. Iyiola Omisore and all PDP faithful who have chosen to pursue their right through the law court,” the communique said

The governors also commended the Nigerian armed forces in their fight against insurgents in the North Eastern part of the country.

They also urged all and the international community to continue to co-operate with the Federal Government in order to stamp out terrorism in the country.

The governors equally commended Mr. Jonathan and the Minister of Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu for the success recorded in the fight against the Ebola Virus Disease, EVD.
