At least 15 people were killed Wednesday after armed men stormed a Federal College in Kano, the state police commissioner said.

The dead include 13 students and two armed attackers. About 47 people were injured, the police said.

Police Commissioner Adenerele Shinaba said the attackers were shot dead by officers during a gun fight.

“What happened was that we detected some suspicious movements of some people and we trailed them only for them to open fire around the school resulting to them gaining entry into the premises and started throwing bombs,” he told journalists at the school.

He said two AK47 rifles have been recovered.

Security has been beefed in Kano metropolis as armed soldiers patrol the streets, manning key locations.

Witnesses had told PREMIUM TIMES earlier that the explosions occurred at about 1.30pm Wednesday, followed by sporadic gunshots.

They said armed men invaded the institution after killing a security personnel at the gate. The attackers later threw improvised explosives at students and shot those who tried to escape.

The area has been deserted as residents and students scampered for safety, our reporter said.
