A 400-level student of Agricultural Economics at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, Obinna Chiaha, was reportedly killed by a commercial vehicle on Friday night.

It was gathered that the vehicle, a Sienna bus, had the inscription ‘Uwak Mfon, Akwa Ibom Motors Nig. Ltd’.

According to an eyewitness account, the vehicle, which was heading to Umuahia, the state capital, hit Chiaha while trying to overtake a trailer on a high speed.

It was learnt that the accident happened close to the main gate of the university on the Umuahia/ Ikot Ekpene road.

A student, who identified himself only as Chidi, told Southern City News that the deceased was taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, where he was confirmed dead.

He said, “Many students, on hearing the sad news of the demise of their colleague, took to the street to protest his death.

“The Vice Chancellor, Professor Francis Otunta, later addressed the students through a telephone conversation with the President of Students Union Government, Mr. Ononiwu Precious.

“He told the students to remain calm as the university would ensure that the deceased student would get justice. The VC also declared Saturday April 28, 2018 as Black Saturday in honour of the deceased.”
