NMA kick against new school resumption date

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) on Monday condemned the new date set by the Federal Government for the resumption of schools in the country. The government had announced September 22, this year, as against the October 12 date it formerly announced.

The association, through its National Secretary-General, Olawunmi Alayaki, said all schools ought to remain shut until all the people placed under surveillance for the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), in the country have been certified free.

Alayaki told newsmen that the body was not happy with the Federal Government’s latest decision on the resumption, stating that it would be better if schools are shut till the last suspected case or patient is certified free of the virus.

The association explained that children could not survive isolation like adults. It did not consider it reasonable that parents would be in a hurry to have their children go back to school that early, since if the virus should entre any school, it will be disastrous.

The body therefore pleaded with the government to shift the resumption date till next year or in the next three months if that is the time it would take before government would have enough time to follow the standard procedure for containing the virus.

“It is worthy to note that the new resumption date for schools by the Federal Government was due to the government’s progress top put an end to the Ebola virus as earlier announced but with that reason, the Nigerian Medical Association is recommending the government to consider shifting the date till December or early part of next year because if Ebola should spread to any school, it would assume another dimension” he declared.
