As the independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, is working hard to ensure that no eligible voter is disenfranchised in the forthcoming 2019 General election, Abians who did not register to vote in 2015 and those who attained the age of 18 after the last election have been advised to do so now.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on ICT and Social Media Strategy, John Okiyi, gave the advise on Monday while speaking to newsmen. Okiyi said that the nationwide continuous voter registration is meant to capture all eligible voters ahead of the 2019 polls. He reminded Abians that getting involved in multiple registrations is a criminal offence. He further pleaded with Civil society organizations, religious groups and traditional rulers to help mobilize Abians for the exercise.
“Those who have not registered previously should go and register. Your vote is your power. Your vote decides who governs you next, not Supreme Court, not lawyers, not Paid propagandists. It is your vote that grants you the power to say this is my government; I put these people in this place. So I urge everyone to go and register but please avoid double registration,” Okiyi said.
INEC had said the continuous voter registration would run till few months to the 2019 general election. And all those who were unable to vote in the last exercise and are now above eighteen years are expected to participate but not until they are registered to vote.
