Local Government Council was established to have control over local affairs as well as financial powers to initiate and direct provision of services, implement projects so as to complement the state & federal government and ensure active participation of the people and traditional institutions to prioritize local initiative and developments. Abia State as at today has been counted among states with constitutionally recognized government at all levels in the Country.

Abians have continued to commend the effort of the present administration for giving back to the people, the right to make decisions on capacity and capabilities of people to enthrone to public service. Local Government brings government closer to the people as a mechanism for deepening democracy as well as engendering socio-economic development at the grassroot levels .

Through the ballot in Abia State, people have once again made strong statements in terms of the kind of leadership they desire. Local Government election in Abia State has ushered in new breeds in the leadership of communities.  At this level,  young councillors and chairmen with great potentials tend to grow to become senators and ministers as the opportunity created, will give room for growth and development.

Through local Council, young people try to distinguish themselves in various assignments and responsibilities as they grow to face and tackle challenges. The election has also highlighted the voting strength of Abia Electorates. Despite low turn-out occasioned by opposition’s resolve to frustrate the exercise, the election was able to confirm that Local Governments in Abia State eg Obingwa, has large number of people within voting age.

The peaceful conduct of the election has sent a clear signal to investors that Abia is made up of people fastened by love and harmony. It therefore points to the fact that we emphasize more on peaceful coexistence than struggle for control of power. Election at the local levels will help to make decisions that are informed by good information and data, that will generally reflect the broad interests of communities.

The election opened another opportunity for Abia business owners to benefit from ABSIEC budget, as over seventy percent (70%) of materials used for the election were locally made.  By such decision, Dr Ikpeazu has brought back the consciousness of Made in Aba to both national and international investors.  It has as well inculcated the “I can do spirit” in the mind of bag makers and printers who will go on to compete for larger contracts from INEC.

For planning purposes, the election was an avenue for the Government to assess the state of infrastructures in some rural communities. The election has come with gains that will stand the test of time.

Ikechukwu Iroha is Media Aide to Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State.
