The Abia State government is to provide palliative measures aimed at reducing the sufferings of road users on federal highways in the state.

Investigations by the South East Voice revealed that the federal highways are in very deplorable condition include the Aba-Ikot Ekpene, Opobo-Azumini, Umuahia –Ikot Ekpene and Umuahia- Port Harcourt expressways. All the roads had been in deplorable conditions, with most being abandoned by motorists.

This was even as it was discovered that palliative works had begun on the dilapidated Faulks Road in Aba through the Ariaria International market as well as the Ukwu Mango road in the area. Interactive programme However, the state governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu said palliative works would soon begin on dilapidated federal highways linking the state just as contractors had been mobilised to site along the Ishiagu- Awgu – Okigwe – Umuahia federal highway.

Ikpeazu, who spoke on a Magic FM Radio interactive programme in Aba, further said that the government would use the dry season window to commence palliative works on the federal highways in the area to make them passable while the “talks will go on between the state and the Federal Government on how to rehabilitate them.” He added that contractors had been asked to return to site as rehabilitation works were suspended during the raining season, stressing that his administration was determined to improve the road infrastructure to promote trade and investments in the state.

While assuring that the contractors would be strictly monitored to ensure they deliver quality roads that would last over 10 years, the governor further stated that they would use the dry season window to complete some other abandoned projects including the Enyimba International Stadium, Faulks/Ariaria Junction roads and Aba-Owerri road in Aba and Aba road in Umuahia, the state capital. “We are back to road construction. We want to do things properly.

We don’t want to use inferior materials and I am promising Abians that as soon as we start the construction exercise, it is going to be ongoing and there won’t be any stoppage of work on Faulks Road and Aba Road (in Umuahia, the state capital) just as the Aba-Owerri road in Aba will also receive attention.

“We are also discussing with the Federal Government on how to repair the dilapidated federal roads linking the state and neighbouring South East and South-South states. While the negotiation is still on, we will do palliative work on federal roads in the state. We are committed to serve the people and we are ready to take the bull by the horn,” Ikpeazu stated.
