Etisalat Telecommunication company, today, handed over modern Information and Communication Technology (ICT), laboratory and educational facilities to two of its adopted schools in Lagos State; Akande Dahunsi Memorial Junior and Senior High Schools.

In a bid to promoting ICT development in public primary and secondary schools, the Telecom company via its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme, launched the 'Adopt-A-School initiative'. This scheme is aimed at bringing sustainable change and development to public primary and secondary schools.

Among the apparatus donated are biology, chemistry and physics laboratories, projector, laptops, a router and provision of free internet access to the senior school's computer laboratory for 12 months in the first instance. Others include the provision of furniture, repair of water treatment plant, reconnection of the schools to the general power grid, as well as other sundry repair works carried out in the schools.

While making the presentation to the management of the schools, the Director, Regulatory and CSR Etisalat Nigeria, Ikenna Ikeme, noted that Akande Dahunsi Memorial Junior and Senior High Schools were adopted in 2009.

Speaking further, Mr. Ikeme explained that ICT is the bedrock of the global socio-economic prosperity, stressing the imperative of empowering Nigerian youth through increased access to modern equipment, relevant online training and educational materials.

On her part, the Principal of Akande Dahunsi Memorial Senior High School, Mrs. Olayinka Badejo, said the students have benefited immensely from the relationship between Etisalat and the schools.

“The laptops, internet facility and laboratory equipment donated to the school will go a long way in boosting the practical knowledge of the students”, she added.

Etisalat Nigeria currently has several intervention initiatives in the education sector, among which include the first-of-its kind Etisalat Telecommunications Engineering Postgraduate Program (ETEPP), in partnership with Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Plymouth University UK, and the Etisalat Academy, UAE, Etisalat Merit Awards Scheme, a scholarship awarding initiative focused on meritorious undergraduates of various Nigerian universities, Career Counselling for secondary school students and a pan-Nigeria teacher training programme in partnership with the British Council.
