Buhari: APC insists on international probe

The All Progressives Congress has reiterated its appeal for an international probe of the attack on Maj. Gen. Muhammad Buhari and Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi.

The party repeated the call in an Eid-el-Fitr message to Nigerians, as contained in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in Kaduna, on Tuesday.

Mohammed said it was unconscionable that any right-thinking person would seek to make political gain from an event that must have been deeply traumatising for those who escaped by the whiskers.

He equally noted that this was not to talk of the deep and life-long pain the incident inflicted on those who were injured or the irreparable loss it inflicted on the families of those who died.

According to the APC, the fact that some political entities are struggling to make political fortune out of the incident make it the more pertinent for an international probe to be carried out. The party said those who were busy beating the drums of war or trivialising the attacks on Buhari, saying it was planned as an image-laundering feat by his party, should have a rethink and show deep introspection.

The statement partly read, “Such careless, asinine and irresponsible statements are more dangerous than the attacks themselves, because they are capable of inciting people, causing hatred and fanning the embers of violence.

“It is a shame that leaders of those, who have engaged in this dangerous game, have not cautioned them. That is why our party insists on an international probe to unravel the perpetrators and motive of the attacks.”

Earlier, the party said, the fact that Muslim faithful were able to celebrate Eid-el-Fitr marking the end of 30 days of fasting, which involved self-deprivation and spiritual supplication to God, was a sign that the Almighty had accepted their supplications.

Mohammed also noted that it was also a sign that the Almighty had shown mercy on our nation.

The APC urged Muslims to imbibe the lessons of Ramadan and apply same in their daily lives, beyond the fasting period.

It noted that it would have been difficult, if not impossible, to be celebrating if Buhari, or the renowned cleric, Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, had been felled by those who targeted their convoys in Kaduna last week.

“Indeed, God loves Nigeria and the least we can do is to love ourselves too,’’ it said.

APC urged all Nigerians to, in the spirit of the season, embraced good neighbourliness and shun hatred and careless statements capable of inciting chaos.

APC said if God had shown Nigeria his love, mercy and kindness, it was wrong for the people of the same country to engage in acts that were capable of triggering anarchy and bringing the nation down.
