35 Dead As Lassa Fever Arrests 6 States

The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole has revealed that 76 cases of Lassa fever were reported in eight states, with 35 deaths recorded and 14 cases confirmed by laboratories.

Prof. Adewole said measures have been put in place to curtail the spread of the disease and ruled out placing travelling restrictions to and fro, the affected areas.

He further noted that the situation has been reported to the World Health Organization.

The Health Minister said some of the measures taken were to reduce maternal mortality through the affected states for prompt and adequate treatment of cases.

Deployment of rapid response teams from the Federal Health Ministry to all the affected states to assist in investigating and verifying the cases and tracing of contracts.

The first case of the current Lassr Fever outbreak was reported in Bauchi State in November 2015.

The six States affected are Bauchi, Nasarawa, Niger, Taraba, Kano, Rivers, Edo and Oyo.
