Despite Federal Government directive for fuel stations to dispense Premium Motor Spirit otherwise known as petrol at #86.30k for independent marketers and #86 for major marketers, filling stations in Abia State still sell above the price. factnewsonline monitored some filling stations in Umuahia, the Abia State Capital.

Nigerians woke up in the new with the announcement that from January the first, Petrol will be sold at eighty six naira, fifty kobo for independent marketers and eighty six naira for major marketers.

This indeed was a good news for the citizens who have been buying the product for as high as #150 and above for almost three months including the festive season.

The excitement that greeted the announcement seemed to have waned as many filling stations across the state still dispense petrol for as high as one hundred and thirty naira.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation retail outlet in Umuahia visited by factnewsonline was under lock and key. The outlets of the major marketers in the capital city were also not open. However, some of the independent marketers were open and sold at between #110 to #130 per litre of petrol.

This some Nigerians interviewed described as worrisome and called on relevant authorities to, as a matter of urgency intervene in the situation.

More worrisome is the fact that beyond buying at the approved pump price, some filling stations still sell with maladjusted metres thereby making life more difficult for the masses.

Meanwhile, the NNPC and PPPRA say its staff has been sent across the country to monitor the sell of petroleum products at the federal government approved pump price. The effect of this monitoring exercise remains to be seen.
