Nigeria has concluded its fifth tenure as the United Nation’s non-permanent representative on the UN Security Council.

Nigeria was first elected into the council for a two year period from 1966 to 1967 and subsequently from 1978 to 1979, 1979 to 1999, 2010 to 2011 and 2013 to 2015.

The Security Council is one of the six principal organs of the UN with powers which include establishment of peacekeeping operations, imposition of sanctions and the authorization of military action through the council’s resolutions.

Other countries that also ended their tenures in December 2015 include Chile, Jordan, Lithuania and Chad.

They would be replaced by Japan, Egypt, Ukraine, Senegal and Uruguay.
