55 people have been killed and 200 others injured in a massive truck bomb attack in Baghdad.

The attack on Thursday morning took place in a crowed vegetable market in Sadr City, a Shia district in the North East of the Iraqi capital.

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant,ISIL, released a statement online claiming the attack.

Media report described the attack as devastating adding that the death toll was expected to rise.

The attack which saw a suicide bomber detonate an explosive device on himself in a busy market happened in a predominately Shia neighbourhood similar to an attack in Baquba city two days ago that allegedly killed dozens of people.

Meanwhile Iraq is experiencing an upsurge in instability with the government struggling to contend with the ISIL group.
