860 of the 1,326 Independent National Electoral Commission staff have refused to declare their assets even after the March General Election, for fear of being investigated.

INEC acting Chairman, Hajiya Amina Zakari has been given till August the 20th to compel the defaulters to fill their Asset Declaration Forms, ADFs, by the Code of Conduct Bureau.

The Bureau in a letter dated August the 3rd noted that part 1 paragraph 11 of the 1999 constitution made it obligatory on public officers to publicly declare their assets adding that at the expiration of the deadline, appropriate actions would be taken on defaulters.

The instruction to mandate INEC staff to declare their assets followed an intelligence report of corrupt practices by some members of staff of the election umpire.

Code of Conduct Bureau after the declaration, will examine it in accordance with the requirements of the code of conduct or any law, retain custody of such declaration and make them available for inspection by any citizen of Nigeria on such terms and conditions as the National Assembly may prescribe, ensure compliance with, and, where appropriate, enforce the provisions of the code of conduct, among others.
