FG to offset Midwives Service Scheme

After a long battle between the federal government and officials of the Midwives Service Scheme (MSS), the government has said it will offset all arrears and allowances owed members of the scheme in order to avert a nationwide strike.

In a communiqué issued in Abuja, the representatives of the MSS commended the Minister of State for Health, Mr. FidelisNwankwo for convening the meeting and appreciated the federal government's commitment to maternal and child survival in Nigeria.

According to details of the communiqué signed by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Health, Mr Linus Awute, Executive Director, National Primary Health Care Development Agency ( NPHCDA ), Dr Ado Muhammed and MSS leader, Mrs Grace Shamonda "payment of the arrears of allowances owed by the NPHCDA due to delayed passage of the budget" will be effected to ease tension between government and member

To that end, the MSS mandated the "Federal Ministry of Health to prevail on state and local governments to also offset all outstanding allowances and discharge all other obligations as stated in the MOU. "This is to be done through the NEC," it said.

The Minister of State for Health, Mr. Nwankwo also called "on all midwives under the MSS to continue to render their invaluable humanitarian services in the 1,000 MSS facilities nationwide while all efforts continue towards settlement of the outstanding obligation."
