The Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress,APC,Gen.Muhammadu Buhari, rtd, has been announced the president-elect of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, following the keenly contested presidential election of March 28.

At the National Judicial Council in Abia, where the media waited for about ten hours before the announcement of the result, the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega, announced that President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party,PDP, polled 12,853,162 votes, while Gen. Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Party,APC, got 15,424,921 votes to emerge as the president-elect.

Earlier, the commencement of the collation of results was disturbed by a PDP stalwart and former Minister of Niger Delta, Godsday Orubebe, who alleged that the electoral umpire Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega was biased and partial in his execution of the assignment and therefore should not be allowed to continue. This stalled the collation process for a while. Prof. Jega who responded to the allegation after listening and watching the drama play out, described the allegations as untrue.

President Goodluck Jonathan had earlier conceded to defeat to the opposition party. This was confirmed by the Chairman of the peace committee set up for the elections, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar. President Jonathan in a broadcast urged Nigerians to accept the results of the elections for the peace of the nation, adding that he  left a legacy on which Nigerian democracy can thrive.

It will be recalled that President  Jonathan and Gen.Buhari signed peace accords that their supporters would not react violently to the outcome of the elections. The accord followed fears of a post - election violence as experienced in 2011.
