Ahead of the 2015 general elections,Abians have urged political office contestants in the state to abide by the "peace pact" signed.
This comes against some inciting statements in recent weeks which has been credited to some candidates and their supporters.

Residents of Umuahia, the Abia State capital have stressed the need for political stakeholders at all levels to buy into key provisions of the peace agreement which was signed in Umuahia by gubernatorial and National Assembly candidates and Chairmen of political parties.

The residents expect that the key components of the peace accord which include public sensitization, youth education, peace building projects and wide awareness campaigns involving politicians and their supporters should be strictly adhered to.
They maintained that it is the responsibility of the leaders, and politicians to ensure that the peace pact is adhered to,while emphasizing the significance of the general elections.

Dickson Okorafor,a clergy with one of the pentecostal churches in the city maintained that it behoves on all the candidates of different political parties to abide by the rules of the pact. The pact, which he described as a convenant between the candidates and the people is a test of their integrity.
Okorafor added that politics should not be seen as a do or die affair if the nation must move forward. He urged every candidate to run an issue based campaign, rather than that of acrimony and bitterness.
Ukpai Kalu on his part,re-emphasized that political office seekers should see the signing of the peace accord as not just an event but a history waiting to happen. He however, called on them to re-sensitize their supporters on the need to run a decent campaign devoid of hatred,if we must achieve a peaceful state, before, during and after the elections.

The first Peace Accord was signed in Abuja by chairmen of political parties and their presidential candidates promising to ensure a peaceful and unified Nigeria before, during and after the elections before the international community including the former Secretary General of the United Nations, Kofi Anan.

Abia State on Wednesday February 25, organized a peace pact signing ceremony by the political office seekers in the state which was overseen by the state command of the Nigeria Police.

While Abia residents applaud the move as a step in the right direction, they maintain that the only way to go is to abide by the agreements reached.
