Abia guber and nass candidates sign peace pact

As part of efforts geared towards achieving a hitch free and peaceful elections in Abia State, candidates of political parties in the state contesting for the gubernatorial and national assembly seats at the forth coming general elections have signed a "peace pact".

The signing of the pact which took place at the Police Officers Mess,Umuahia, was manned by the Assistant Inspector General of Police,Zone 9, A.U. Gwary, and the Abia State Police Commissioner Habila Joshak.

AIG A.U.Gwary before the signing enjoined Abia politicians to conduct themselves according to the provisions of the law,before,during and after the elections. Adding that the pact is a symbol of their promise of a peace Abia and a guide to their conduct and behaviours.

The pact as read out by the Deputy Commissioner of Police,Leye Oyebade read as follows -
a. To run issue based campaigns at states and local government levels, refrain from campaigns that will involve religious sentiments,ethnic or tribal profiling.

b. Refrain from making or causing  to make in our names and that of our political public statements, pronouncements, declarations or speeches to incite any form of violence before, during and after elections.

c. To forcefully and publicly  speak out against proactive utterances and oppose all out of electoral violence either perpetrated by our supporters or opponents.

d. To commit ourselves and political parties to the monitoring of the adherence to this accord.

e. To refrain from and or causing any of the posters,flex,billboards,photographs or any of the electronically emanated images of aspirant of political office seekers to be torn,removed,damaged or treated in any indignified manner as to cause breach of the peace in the state.

This was followed by the signing of the "peace pact" by all the chairmen of political parties and candidates present
The candidates all took time to speak on behalf of their political parties as they promised to  abide by the rules of the pact, but laid complaints ranging from poor Permanent Voter Card distribution, to restrictions to place adverts on some government owned medium.

Special Guest of Honour,Gov. Theodore Orji represented by his deputy, Chief Emeka Ananaba appreciated the police for the initiative, while urging the candidates to play according to the rules.

AIG A.U Gwary however, assured of a level playing ground for all political parties.

Abia State Police Commissioner, Habila Joshak on his part assured of the protection of lives and property,as well as sensitive and non sensitive electoral materials

The was attended by the Peoples Democratic Party,PDP,All Progressives Congress,APC,All Progressives Grand Alliance,APGA,Progressive People Alliance, PPA and Alliance Congress Party of Nigeria,ACPN.
