ABIA STATE POLICE COMMAND HOLDS SEMINAR AHEAD OF 2015 ELECTIONS

As part of efforts geared towards free,fair and credible elections in 2015,the Abia State Police Command has held a seminar tagged "TOWARDS A VIOLENCE FREE 2015 ELECTIONS".
The seminar which was held at Michael Okpara Auditorium Umuahia,had participants from political parties, the Nigerian Bar Association, the Independent National Electoral Commission, the Nigerian Immigration Service,the Navy,NDLEA,NSCDC,the National Orientation Agency,the press,civil society organisations and members of the public.


Abia State Governor,Chief Theodore Orji represented by his deputy Chief Emeka Ananaba, commended the Nigerian Police Force for the seminar geared towards a successful outing of the 2015 general elections. He emphasized the need to maintain the existing peace in the state as the election draws near.


Deputy Commissioner of Police,Leye Oyebade emphasized the essence of the event,which is to place the cart well on the table to ensure a credible 2015 general elections,while highlighting the need for collaboration with all stakeholders to ensure violence free elections in 2015.


Guest lecturer,Prof. E.E Alemiika,who spoke on the theme "VIOLENT FREE 2015 ELECTIONS", maintained that the reason why elections in Nigeria is characterized by violence especially thuggery is because Nigerians have not realized the purpose and value of elections,which he described as a critical pillar of a democratic society,wgile highlighting equality,freedom,fundamental human rights and periodic elections as the elements of true democracy.


The Resident Independent Electoral Commissioner of the state,Prof.Jacob Jatu,who spoke on "ELECTORAL LAWS AND ENFORCEMENT" emphasized the need for citizens to have their voter card,which allows them entrance to the polling units on election days. Jatu added that for elections to be adjudged free,it must be conducted in an atmosphere characterized by the absence of intimidation and the presence of wide range of fundamental human rights.


Other guest lecturers at the event,which includes the Attorney General of the state,Hon. Ukpai Kalu,represented by the permanent secretary Ministry of Justic,Enyinnaya Alozie,SP Esther Nwosu,and Bar Amara Onubugo,Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association,Abia State chapter all spoke on "ELECTORAL OFFENCES,AND DILIGENT PROSECUTION,ORDER AND CONTROL OF PROCESSIONS" ahead of the elections.


The Nigerian Police Command,Abia State also issued a communique at the end of the seminar.
The CP,Adamu Ibrahim while appreciating participants at the event,re-emphasized that the Abia State Police Command is poised to make a difference at the 2015 elections.


The event was attended by all the DSP's,DPO's and other police officers serving in the state.
