Commercial activities came to a halt in Abiriba on Tuesday, November 25, as indigenes – both from home and abroad – converged to honour some women for outstanding and remarkable achievement in their different works of life.

The celebration was organised as part of events to mark the 14th Traditional Coronation Anniversary of Kalu Ogbu Enachioken (IV), monarch of Abiriba land in Southeast Nigeria. The event was massively attended by the indigenes, friends and well-wishers of Abiriba Kingdom.

Among the dignitaries that graced the occasion were Emeka Wogu, former Minister of Labour and Productivity; Ndi Okereke Onyiuke, former Director-general of Nigeria Stock Exchange; Nkechi Obi; Justice Onyekachi Aja Otisi; as well as Commissioners, Local government Chairmen and a host of others.

Among the Awardees include, Ndi Okereke Onyiuke; Justice (Mrs.) Onyekachi Aja Otisi; Nkechi Obi; Ukwuori Ndukwe Kalu; Controller of Prisons, Abia State Command; Okpete R. Kalu; and Linda Oyeni Ugbaja. Others include Uche Enyindiya Onuma, a Commodore of the Nigerian Navy; Kalaria Uba Obasi; and others.

Some of the awardees who spoke to Factnewsonline gave gratitude to God, Enachioken and the entire people of Abiriba Kingdom for the recognition and the awards.

Kalaria, while speaking on the entire event, expressed gratitude to God advising younger women to hold fast to God and be submissive to their husbands. “Teach your children to know God which is the paramount thing in life and you will succeed” she added.

Okereke-Onyiuke thanked the Enachioken and Abiriba people for bringing her to Abiriba for such an honourary award. She encouraged women to stand up to the challenges facing the female gender and support their husbands. “The awards today are symbolic, it stresses that Enachioken and his Council wants women to stand and partner with their men for greater achievements” she said.

Onyekachi who spoke on behalf of the awardees expressed deep gratitude to God and the people of Abiriba for such honour. She stressed: “What has happened today is not just symbolic but a great encouragement to the girl child. We want to assure you that we will continue to be role models to Abiriba women, the girl child and the Nigerian women at large, and also we will always support Abiriba kingdom".

Though November 25 was the first time such recognition and award was conferred on any Abiriba woman, the Enachioken, during his speech assured the people that the event has come to stay. “There is thinking paradigm shift among the Enachioken in-Council and that thought has been translated into Action today, I want to assure you that this event has come to stay. Every year, or by-Annually Abiriba women will gather to honour some of our women with remarkable achievements.

“I want to congratulate the recipients of these awards; I also thank them for a Job well-done. We know there are other women who have done remarkably well, an award deserving achievements but are not selected in this maiden edition, I want to encourage you to keep on with your good works, in due time we will get to you and reward you accordingly.”
