The top four teams in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) suffered defeats on the road in Wednesday's matches.

Defending champions and table-toppers, Kano Pillars, Nasarawa United, Enyimba and Dolphins were the top four teams before the start of Match Day 28 of the Nigerian top flight.

Kano Pillars, Nasarawa United and Enyimba retained their places in first, second and third positions respectively while Dolphins slipped out of the top four after Wednesday's matches.

Kano Pillars, without key players Rabiu Ali, Gambo Mohammed and Nafizi Ammani, lost 0-2 at Bayelsa United.

A goal in each half from Frank Egharevba and Oghogho Oduokpe helped Bayelsa United ease their relegation woes as they move into 15th place with 36 points.

Second-placed Nasarawa United also surrendered the full points at Gombe United in the northern derby. Suleiman Usman scored the winning goal to lift Gombe United out of the bottom four.

Enyimba, who are in third spot with 43 points and four behind leaders Pillars, held off Lobi Stars comfortably and ended the first 45 minutes scoreless.

But the Enyimba contingent had their hearts broken when Lobi were awarded a spot kick and their goalkeeper, Terkaa Melai stepped up to score the goal from 12 yards.

Wolves overtook Dolphins in the standings by virtue of a 3-1 win over the Port Harcourt club.

Gbolahan Salami scored twice and Ike ThankGod scored in between Salami's goals to help Wolves to a 3-1 win over Dolphins, who got their goal through Emem Eduok.

The Warri club are now in fourth place with 43 points, one better than Dolphins in fifth.

Yusuf Adio and Utibe Archibong netted in each half to help Akwa United defeat Giwa FC and move into sixth position with 42 points while Sunshine Stars were held to a 2-2 draw at FC Taraba.

Onyekachi Okafor scored the winning goal for struggling Crown FC to beat El-Kanemi 1-0 while the southeast derby between Abia Warriors and Enugu Rangers produced no goals.

Sharks ran over Kaduna United 3-0 thanks to goals from Frederick Obomate, Christian Pyagbara and Ifeanyi Inyam.

Former champions, Heartland, ended their hoodoo against Nembe City winning a first league game against the Bayelsa club 2-0. Emeka Ogbugh and Bobby Clement scored for Heartland.
