A group of lawyers in Lagos State has accused the Nigerian Police in the state of being used by some interests in Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to humiliate their clients in readiness for 2015 elections.

The lawyers representing Mustapha Adekunle, who is also known as Sego; Fatai Alli, also known as Always; and Fatai Olori, who is known as  Agbara, said the police declared their clients wanted in a bid to keep them incommunicado till the end of the elections.

In a press release by the lawyers, signed by Taiwo Oluwa-Oreagba (Mrs.) of Oluwa-Oreagba Chambers, the lawyers were not amused that the Police declared their clients wanted to an answer to some questions on a murder case.

“Our attention have been drawn to a publication that appeared on the Daily Sun Newspaper of 14th October, 2014 wherein our above named clients were declared wanted by the office of the Police Public Relations Department, Lagos State Command on the allegation of Conspiracy and Murder” Mrs. Oluwa-Oreagba wrote.

She expressed suspicion that the Police authorities in the state were working for the PDP in the state to manipulate the election by keeping their clients in detention until elections are concluded.

On October 14, 2014, Lagos State Police Public Relations Office, made a publication declaring the men wanted for the murder of Afeez Otun, also known as Ashake, who until his death was the All Progressives Congress (APC) deputy youth leader in Lagos Island. The three wanted men are all members of the APC.

The lawyers believed that declaring the men “wanted” was not in good faith: “It is a notorious fact that the PDP, who’s youth leader, Rasheed Ashipa AKA Abija (who was arrested by the police and is currently enjoying police bail) was alleged to have master minded the killing of Asake, is prevailing on the police to arrest and detain our clients, who are known supporters of APC, on trump up charges till after the forth coming general elections, hence the hurried declaration by the police of our clients as wanted persons”  wrote Oluwa-Oreagba.

It is on record that APC have, in the past few days, have been pursuing the same theme accusing the state Police authorities of working for the PDP by wanting to detain the trio that were declared wanted.

But when Factnewsonline contacted the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Kenneth Osuji, to get the Police side of the story, he said the allegation ran “contrary to the spirit of investigation”.

His words: “The allegation runs contrary to the spirit of investigation. An investigation was conducted into that case and those persons were found to be in a position to answer one or two questions. And that is the reason why they’ve been declared wanted because all efforts to get them have so far proved abortive”.

He added that all the “wanted” men should do, should be to come forward and answer some questions since they have not been proclaimed guilty. He explained that the “Police is called Nigerian Police force, and it exists for the safety of all Nigerians irrespective of creed, colour, race or political affiliation, and so to say that the Police is working for PDP or APC is baseless; there is no reason to say that.”
