Lagos state government on Monday through its commissioner for Health, Doctor Jide Idris, in a press briefing said the state government would be inaugurating a 24-hour Ebola Surveillance Team to deal with any Ebola emergency should it arises again anywhere in the state.

The state has concluded plans to create five teams, of which each would have men and materials on standby every day for 24 hours. The commissioner also promised a Decontamination team that would consist of at least a driver, two environmentalists and other necessary men and materials that would be needed.

His words: “Ebola Virus Disease Team on 24/7 standby to be created with an ambulance, as well as an EVD clinician team leader and a driver. Five of such teams will be available. Decontamination team consisting of at least a driver, two environmental health officers and a supervisor will also be created. Two of such teams will be available.”

Meanwhile, the State government has also promise to support the First Consultant Hospital, Obalende, Lagos where the first index Ebola case was diagnosed with N50million as a business support gesture for the medical centre.

The State Government also said it would extend similar gesture to each of the 20 victims of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) either dead or alive.

The commissioner however said, the gesture should never be mistaken for compensation, but should rather be seen as goodwill in view of what the centre and survivors passed through.

He noted that the idea behind the gesture was to get the people working there and the businesses back on its feet. He said it was necessary to have the businesses to re-secure patronage of their customers and should not be seen as compensation but a gesture of goodwill on the part of government.”
