Left to right - Kukah, Sultan and Uduaghan

Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa'ad Abubukar and Bishop of Sokoto Catholic Diocese, Bishop Hassan Kukah, stated today that greed of Nigerian leaders was responsible for the anger of the people, which has degenerated into terrorism and other vices in today's society.

Speaking separately at a lecture to mark the 60th birthday of Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan at the Events Centre, Asaba, Sultan Abubakar condemned the attitude of leaders who would not make sacrifices for the masses but rather amass wealth to the detriment of the people. He asserted that when the people are hungry, they will revolt and everybody will suffer the consequences.

He told Uduaghan that God will ask him what he did with his eight years of leadership and judge him accordingly. "Then it may be too late, so serve honourably" he advised leaders.

He also advised leaders not to amass wealth and leave the common man out in the cold. "Leaders are not those who amassed wealth and left the common man with nothing. If you say you are a leader and your doors are not open 24hours to your people, then you are not a leader" he said.

The Sultan identified the problem of Nigerian leaders as their tendency to always shy away from the truth, giving it different colourations. He urged them to seek out the problems of the people with the aim of solving them, in place of selfish gains. While wishing Deltans to have a Governor that would eat with the common man, he begged Governor Uduaghan to tolerate him if he (Sultan) has annoyed him in his speech.

Making his own statement, Bishop Kukah said terrorism resulted as a result of anger that was not processed. He challenged leaders to provide a platform for the people to process their anger as the only solution. "This can only be done through the implementation of the provisions of the constitution" he proffered.

He condemned situations where a leader has about seven houses while most of his followers are homeless. "We have right to be angry when so much is spent on processes without results, when so much is spent on elections".

He warned leaders in the country to change from their annoying ways or they would bring the wrath of the people against them. "Many of us are refraining from talking with the hope that one day, opportunity will come to us" he said.
