Namibia, Nigeria square up in AWC

Nigeria's Super Falcons will come up against their Namibian counterparts on Friday in one of Group A's final games in the African Women Championship at the Sam Nujoma Stadium in Windhoek.

The Nigerians have had a clean start to the championship having won their opening two games against Ivory Coast and Zambia as well as netting 10 goals and conceding two.

Edwin Okon's team started by defeating Ivory Coast 4-2 before dismissing Zambia 6-0.

The Super Falcons by virtue of that impressive start have already booked a place in the last four of the tournament but will want to continue their dominance of Group A when they face the Namibians.

For the West Africans, the star of their campaign has been France-based striker, Desire Oparanozie, and she has found in youngster Asisat Oshoala a capable partnership up front.

Oparanozie is currently the leading scoring of the championship on four goals. Oshoala, Osinachi Ohale, Ngozi Okobi, Esther Sunday and former African Women Player of the Year, Perpetua Nkwocha, who has been a bit-player, are all on two goals.

That long list of goal-scoring players surely presents Jaqueline Shipanga's Namibia the headache of settling for which of the Falcons players to shut out when they meet in Windhoek.

On the other hand, the Namibians began their campaign on a promising note with a 2-0 win over Zambia. Rita Riana Williams and Thomalina Azania Adams got the goals.

But they hit the sack when they came up against the Ivorians who handed them a 1-3 defeat. Zenatha Goeieman Coleman scored Namibia's solitary goal on that occasion.

However, Nigeria look clear favourites to claim another three points and make it three wins in three games before the championship enters the last four stage.

The Namibia versus Nigeria match at the AWC is live on SuperSport 9 from 3.45pm Nigerian time (4.45pm CAT).
