A gang of armed robbers yesterday killed a Nollywood actor identified as Clems Onyeka while Factnewsonline reporter narrowly escaped death by stray bullets in the same attack on a bullion van in Asaba, Delta State.

The gang tried hijacking the van on DBS road Asaba when they were challenged by a team of Police officers from the Delta State Police Command. It was in the ensuing gun duel which lasted for nearly 30 minutes, that the deceased got hit by a stray bullet which pierced through his car, his head and out through his eye, killing him instantly on the spot.

Although, Factnewsonline eye-witness' account says that several persons were injured in the crossfire, the exact figure could not be confirmed as at the time of filing this report. The robbers, who operated in a Toyota Camry car, got reinforcement when security operatives challenged them.

However, they could not succeed as the driver of the van made a detour and escaped with the van and its contents intact. The attacked bullion van, according to our investigation, is said to be owned by a new generation bank in Awka, Anambra State and was heading towards Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) office on Mariam Babangida Way, Asaba, when the robbers in an ambush struck.

There was pandemonium in the area as people ran for dear lives, and vehicles were abandoned at the middle of the roads with the drivers running to safety. Sporadic shots hit the air, buildings and persons as the robbers made a getaway through the Onitsha-Benin expressway.

Public Relations Officer of the state police command in the state, DSP Celestina Kalu  said the command has already spread its dragnets to trap down the fleeing criminals while a senior police officer disclosed to Factnewsonline that one of the robbers has already been cut.

When this reporter went to the FMC Asaba where the casualties were being treated, it was confirmed that one person is still in a very critical condition as at 6pm yesterday.
