Aziza, Urhobo leader buried amidst tributes

The body of late Major-General Patrick Newton Aziza has been laid to rest in his Adagbrassa home in Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State. The retired military officer left amidst so many encomiums from many people in the Urhobo nation, and the state, as well as his family and friends.

President Goodluck Jonathan described him as a man who came, saw and conquered. He said the late Urhobo leader is somebody who served the Country faithfully and meritoriously.

Represented by the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Steve Oru, the President saw Aziza's death as a big loss to, not only the Urhobo, but Nigeria in it's entirety, having served it in different capacities. He called on all to emulate his exemplary life of selfless service.

The chief host, Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, while speaking during the valedictory session at the Urhobo Cultural Centre, Uwviamuge, Agbarho and late Aziza's Adagbrassa home described him as a great man who contributed to bringing peace in the Niger Delta region. "At the peak of the Niger Delta crisis, as then SSG, I invited all the retired Generals for a way forward. The ideas he brought helped to solve that problem". Adding that, "he deserved the CFR honour which was given to him after serving meritoriously both at the federal and state levels".

Uduaghan enjoined the Urhobos whom he left behind to unite as a body to move Urhobo land and the state forward. "I urge all of you to work together to achieve what God has in store for us".

On his part, the Acting President General of the Urhobo Progress Union, Chief Joe Omene called all his tribesmen to see the interest of the Urhobo nation as their paramount concern. He vowed to keep the good fights of the late Aziza by seeing to the interest of Urhobo which is a legacy the deceased left behind.

Others who eulogized the late Urhobo leader include the Deputy Governor of the State, an Urhobo PDP Governorship Aspirant. - Obaisi Ovie Omo-Agege and Chief Tom Amioku. They extolled his good works while lamenting that he will be greatly missed by all.

However, "we are consoled by his enviable record of accomplishments and the fact that life must have a beginning and an end".

Dignitaries present at the funeral service include, former Governor of Oyo state, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Chief of Army Staff (represented by the GOC of 2 Mechanized Division), General Ishaya Bamaiyi rtd,  public officers and a host of tradional rulers.

Major-General Patrick Newton Aziza (rtd) was until his death in August 2014, the President-General of Urhobo Progress Union, a sociocultural organisation which oversees the fifth largest ethnic group's affairs, including politics.
