Sokoto Sultanate Council (SSC), in a statement yesterday declared Saturday, October 4, as Eid el-Kabir. The announcement was made by Chairman of the Council’s Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sambo Wali Junaidu.

According to the statement, following the sighting of the moon by various committees across the country, the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, accepted the report and accordingly declared Thursday as the first day of Zulhijja, 1435.

In the lunar-based Calendar of Islam, the celebration falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah and lasts for four days. In the international Gregorian calendar, the dates vary from year to year, drifting approximately 11 days earlier each year.
