The Vice Presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in this year's presidential election, Mr Peter Obi, had an interactive meeting with members of Zonal Executive Committee and State Working Committees of the Party in Southeast today in Enugu. The meeting, which was at the instance of the Zonal Chairman of the Party; Deacon Austine Umahi, took place at the Iyienyi Zonal office of the Party, in Independence Layout.

The meeting had been scheduled for 1.30 pm but unlike many Nigerian dignitaries, Mr Peter Obi arrived for the meeting at exactly 1.25 pm.

Addressing the Party officers, Mr Obi said this year's election is not about Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to him, it is about the survival of Nigeria. He sighted example of the security situation in such States as Borno and Zamfara that are homes of the Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Staff, respectively.
Mr Obi regretted that Nigeria has retrogressed from its previous seventh position on terrorism to third, only after Afghanistan and Iraq.

On economy, Mr Obi painfully stated that Nigeria has no economy. He said the situation has become so worrisome as  Nigerian youths in their productive age have been rendered unproductive due to lack of vision, planning and effective implementation. He said it is unfortunate Nigeria, under Buhari's APC government, has become the capital of poverty.
Mr Obi frowned at a situation where a quarter of Nigeria's 2019 budget will be devoted only to service debt, with gross domestic product being on the decline.

The PDP Presidential Candidate lamented that because of the abysmal managerial performance of the APC administration, which was a red sign, the Hongkong Shanghai Banking Corporation, HSBC, pulled out of Nigeria. Yet, it did not give any concern to the present government. He was uneasy to observe that while Nigeria currently borrows at 9% for consumption, Ghana is borrowing at only 4% for production.

He urged the Igbo and Nigerians to look beyond partisanship and save the future of the country, which is the only country we can call our own.

He expressed optimism that, by God's grace, the Presidential Candidate of the Party; Alhaji Atiku Abubakar who is a well known detribalized Nigerian, will bring his entrepreneurial wealth of experience to bear on all facets of the Nigerian polity, as to make it work again.

Earlier in his welcome speech, the Zonal Chairman, Deacon Umahi, had assured Mr Obi of the natural disposition of the members of the Party in the zone to mobilize effective support for the Party in this year's general election.
Deacon Umahi informed the South-East officers of the Party that PDP will hold its South-East zonal rally on Friday 18th January, 2019. He promised that the rally will be quite exceptional.

The Zonal Chairman directed that all Governorship and National Assembly Candidates of the Party in the zone should include the photos of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and Mr Peter Obi on their campaign posters.

Certain Campaign Committees were created at the instance of the Zonal Chairman, as directed by the National Executive of the Party.
The Zonal Chairman made it clear that the issue of campaigns was the business of the various executive committees. He called on State Governors get members of executive committees of the Party to be fully involved in the organization and execution of the Party's campaigns.

Among those that attended the meeting were; the five State Chairmen of the Party in the zone, including Sir Johnson Onuigbo of Abia State, the Zonal Legal Adviser, Barr Ukpai Ukairo, a member of the Zonal Executive Committee; Chief Allen Nwachukwu, the Deputy Chairman of the Party in Abia State; Chief Princewill Onyegbu and the State Publicity Secretary of the Party in Abia State; Sir Don Ubani, who urged leaders of the Party in the zone to be sincere in their commitment to Atiku/Obi Presidential election and also strongly advised that the zonal rally of the Party slated for Friday 18th of this month should, for many strategic reasons, be held in Enugu.
